In a world where Lord of the Rings trilogies can reign supreme in movies for so long we are obviously full of people who find the fantasy world appealing. Whether this is some deep seeded notion of subconscious escapism or just a general enjoyment of all things creative and otherworldly, it is obvious in our choices of movies, artwork, toys and yes, skin art, that we have a great love for the unknown, the seemingly impossible and just the outright wow factor of some of the creations that artist and Hollywood have formulated in the last twenty years or so. When I think back to being a kid when E.T. or Star Wars was the best we had in creative ideas for Sci-Fi or Fantasy, I kind of smile inwardly and appreciate being able TO appreciate how much fantasy has expanded just in my lifetime alone.

Great color here. Dragons are considered a part of fantasy art of course. But there is an old saying that resembles, “History becomes Myth when its scholars no longer tell their tales.” Food for thought, if you can grasp that!

Pretty great mermaid in my opinion. But also ouchy fresh.

I expanded this one a bit because, WOW!!!! this really is an incredible freakin tattoo in my opinion. Tell me those blades of grass do not look three dimensional. My Irish ancestral notions are also very pleased with the shamrock darting off to the side!

Bio-mechanical tattoos are quickly gaining popularity. These tattoos that blend man and machine may be an ever increasing possibility in our futures, but for now, and likely luckily, they are just some incredibly wild pieces of skin art.

This bio-mech head is fairly intricate in its detail. For those of you that have never had your dome inked I can tell you, this didn’t hurt much at all. Seriously. Well except for the lavender color trails down the sides of the neck, but the old skull? Very little nerve endings there like other areas, skull tattoos are relatively painless.

Pretty cool breakthrough from where I see it. Looks real and just enough bio-mech in there to raise questions as to is this woMAN or MACHINE!?

This  has a predator feel I suppose. A bit of lashing of a perhaps less than normal mech monster but still very nice work!

And WOW, this is a lot of work. And on some VERY sensitive places. And we can’t even see where it ends!

So although bi0-mech tattoos may not be my thing in particular, I think the above works of skin art have some very credible and realistic art form to them that perhaps will become more popular as our chances to make this a reality grow closer. And although the bottom one may be glaringly obvious, I feel it’s important to point out that all of these photos are of women and their personal skin art!

Also a huge fan of the zodiac I can really appreciate a good piece of zodiac skin art. The lovely and sensual Scorpio has found a great tattoo in this creation. Also a very sexy place for a tattoo!

I actually can appreciate this take on Aquarius. This offers a bit more than the usual symbolic water bearer figure.

Now this is an Aries tattoo I can truly grow to love. Great black work!

With so many different zodiac signs people also tend to create combinations of signs for their loved ones as well. I have my own sign on my ankle and no one really ever ask me what it is. Tells me something since they ask about more obvious things. Says a lot for the knowledge people have about the zodiac in general!

Out of so many popular designs there are on earth some of the most highly tattooed art stays the same. Here are 10 of the top 50 tattoos for 2010.

The ever popular Tribal Art!

Though most of us wouldn’t put them here, the Star or the Nautical Star are very commonly received tattoos.

The cross in just about any form is an extremely long lasting in popularity form of skin art. This particular type of cross is known as a Celtic Cross.

http://tattoo5.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/Angel-Tattoo-Designs1.jpgThe angel tattoo is ever popular as well. However this is one of the tattoos that men and women seem to get equally as much. Womens angel tattoos lean towards the angelic harmonious themes while mens angel tattoos lean more towards avenging or fallen angel designs.

Wings are also very popular, and as you can see from this unique variation, they don’t have to be the wings of angels! This looks like the wings of a bone dragon to me. Killer art here!

Maori tribal art is also a very popular tattoo. Although this has its roots in the Pacific, the other tribal art listed above is considered more Native to America.

The Dragon tattoo is very popular and one of my personal favorites of course. This one being a spectacular example from my point of view.

The Phoenix tattoo is rich in symbolism and popularity. Great piece of work here!

The butterfly is always ever popular too. This one I am quite sure was a very sensitive one to receive. Some of those fleshy spots in the center of the back really freakin’ HURT!

The fairy is the last on the list for this ten. This one here is also a very great example of the fine line work that can go into things like fairys wings or dragons scales.

From the past to the present Rock stars have always been pioneers and innovative ones in their skin art choices. But don’t start thinking that it has been just the last generation or so of rockers who  have favored skin art. In past times, tattoos were some unspoken badge of membership into a darker sub culture. They were mostly viewed as acts of rebellion and only the most defiant would dare to sport their body art.

So who started some of this, who were the true rocker pioneers who rocked their skin art as proudly as they rocked their tunes?Greg Allman

Cher

Janis Joplin

The two women here, Cher and Janis, were the true pioneers in women rockers who sported skin art. Other famous women like Joan Baez had tattoos as well, but Janis and Cher, they couldn’t get enough of showing theirs off. It has gone a long way in desensitizing a LOT of old school folks who could have kept on perpetuating labels on women with skin art.

Some women shy away from the more feminine tattoos but there are many great reasons to take notice of them these days. Artist have begun to differentiate between areas specifically great spots for men to get inked and have apparently found some more innovative ways to ink women that can help accentuate many features. A few of my favorite feminine tattoos are below. This may be considered rated R to some I suppose.

Yep quite sure this was very painful. Not that it isn’t innovative in a female aspect, but not something I’d consider.

I think the tattoo on this girls side flows awesome with the line of her body. Sexy tattoo just because of placement.

Love this too, something always sensual about the line of the spine itself.

I remember growing up my main goal was to be old enough to walk to the local tattoo parlor which was situated about 2 miles from my middle class neighborhood. And when I finally turned 12 I dubbed myself old enough to make the journey. I spent a lot of time hanging out with those tattooist. My mom would say that all the time I spent with them is what triggered me to get inked in the first place, but it was just the opposite. I had known I wanted ink for what then seemed like forever. So my journey to the shop was a long awaited one.

Back then, we only had Buzzards nest. Yep, a guy named Buzzard who ran a shop that sat right next door to a happening night club. I can fondly remember sitting on the stoop at Buzzards nest just being happy with life. While my dad had always been a judgmental person who had a lot to say about people who covered themselves in tattoos, just like with every other opinion my parents shared with me of the world and all of those in it, I went out to seek the truth for myself.

I met bikers who would question why I was there, where were my parents, how did I get all the way up here? But never did one of them ever make an ungentlemanly moves towards me.  Indeed they seemed to understand, and on occasion when the rebel in me kicked up and I ran away. These same guys would shelter me, which still encouraging me to enjoy my childhood, to quit screwing up so much.

One of those guys was named Hooter. When I was around 12 I remember how he would begrudgingly let me into his apartment and share conversations with me. But what I could never forget nor ignore was the brotherhood that all these guys shared. And even though I was their little wandering pain in the ass, I know they would have never let anyone hurt me without the person who hurt me jeopardizing their very life.

So I wanted to share some tattoos of some good guys. These guys I know personally, and also know that beneath their extremely fine exteriors, there are men who have far more on their plates than what may appear.

Okay so everyone likes flower tattoos. I really don’t. Now, if that flower tattoo is a lotus, I feel differently. So what makes the lotus flower different for me? Well this flower doesn’t get planted in a healthy soil and grow months later or return year to year. This feisty flower is born on the bottom of a pond, deepest in the muck. From there it fights its way slowly up, up towards the light of the sun reflecting on the surface of the water.

This flower is commonly symbolized as an awakening, particularly spiritually, that an individual may be trying to express. A more general definition may be from a person who feels that they have been through a hard time and came out fine on the other side. Just as this delicate flower was once on the bottom living in the much and grew towards the glory of the warming sunshine that finally allowed it to bloom.

The lotus flowers as well as peonies are popular among Japanese tattoo artist.

I particular enjoyed finding the ‘dark lotus’ blossom tattoo here.
