Statistics have shown that American acceptance of the art of tattooing has grown by over 10% in the last 80 years. If this doesn’t sound like much to you this is the difference in an average of 6% or about 10 million Americans in 1936 up to 16% in a survey recorded in a 2003 Harris Poll. Numbers shown are nearly tripled. With an estimated 20,000 + tattoo studios running in the United States alone, finding the perfect place for your skin art is no longer a problem as it once was.

On the internet these days. One of the top three ranking generalized search engine queries are regarding tattoos in some manner. In July of he year 2002 internet rankings showed tattoos coming in at number 2 on search engines. This says incredible amounts for the overall popularity of tatttoos in this day and age of advanced technology.

http://fun.ql4.org/files/sexy-tattoo-models/sexy-tattoo-models-20.jpgHow Do Tattoos Make You Feel?

It will come as a slight surprise to realize that 34% of those with tattoos say that their tattoos make them feel sexy! More women then men may say this, but at the same time many men have said that a female having a tattoo has made them more attractive to them. Up to 29% of people with tattoos said that their skin art makes them feel rebellious and only 5% of skin art enthusiast claim that their tattoos make them feel more intelligent.

How Often Do People Regret Getting Their Tattoos?

A large majority of tattooed Americans do not regret their lifelong decisions on their skin art. But 17% do express some regrets in their choices. Odd surveys have shown that those who regret their tattoos the most are tattooed Republicans at 24% and Americans living in Southern States at 21%. Well, HMMM, I’d love to say more, but there is no room for political or stereotypical arguments here!  The largest regretted type of tattoo in these instances were occasions when someone had a persons name or initials tattooed into their skin. http://nuviderm.files.wordpress.com/2009/08/tattoo-regret.jpg

Believe it or not there is a lot of methodology used in figuring out these statistics. Honestly as a lover of skin art of all varieties I am just glad to know that at least if some of our scientist are willing to spend years testing how ketchup ages in petri dishes, there are other scientist willing to get to the bottom of why Republicans with ex girlfriends names tattooed on them suffer the most regrets!

So it has become common for celebrities to sport their own skin ink in the last 20 years. Something I of course, was happy to see slowly become more acceptable over the past few years. So for the sake of getting to the point, lets get to the point with some fairly private information on some lesser known celebrity tattoos!

http://home.comcast.net/~rexth_ai/tattoo/ait6.jpgAllen Iverson

Allen has several tattoos. From his early beginnings where he was seen to sport at least one piece of skin art, his collection has definitely grown and quickly. At one point Iverson explained to an interviewer that his tattoo of the head of a soldier represented his harsh early beginnings in life and his battle to reach beyond that. He attributes the likeness of a soldier to himself for making it alive and safe to stardom.

http://www.eviltattoo.com/celeb/johnnydepp.jpgJohnny Depp

Johnny Depp has 13 tattoos total. Each and everyone of them of course has deep meaning to him. Johnny who is known to be an introspective actor who does not covet celebrity status OR being called the sexiest man alive, several times! Johnny has several tattoos including his daughters name, Lily-Rose tattooed right above his heart.

http://anarochka.files.wordpress.com/2009/04/nicole-richie-ankle-tattoo.jpgNicole Richie

Well as much as I love to enjoy watching starlets screw up (don’t kill me for saying it just because you won’t!) I must say I have enjoyed watching Nicole Richie straighten her mess of a life up, and pronto. She seems to have grasped the concept of adulthood and motherhood as well as some pretty fine taste in Skin art. Nicole is thought to have 9 and a half (?) tattoos! With a rosary on her left ankle and foot as well as some tiny delicate angel wings on her back. She seems to have taken the soft approach with her skin art as well.

With many celebrities these days having no fear in adorning themselves with their own personal skin art, I continue to look forward to some of the best creations money can buy!

And why is it your favorite? http://www.ratemyink.com/images/ul/701/rip-mum-tattoo-70104.jpeg

Many people, even those with enormous amounts of tattoos can surprise you with what they may tell you is their favorite. From reasons that regard a persons spirituality to a tattoo of a long lost best friend whose memory sticks close to the heart, sometimes literally.

Occasionally I have run across people who sport body covering tattoos with wildly beautiful colors, amazing depth and clarity as well as just being incredible art, only to have them point out to me some immensely obscure tattoo they got when they were 18 on a bet or a joke. The memory of the episode obviously entirely clouding out what seems to be better art work located elsewhere.

So its increasingly hard to think that you may know what someones favorite may be unless you ask. I have found over the years that meaningful tattoos come in all shapes and forms.  Like the tattoo of the baby feet on these feet. Very painful, but also very symbolic of a parents love and a wonderful way, in my opinion anyway, to commemorate the birth of your most cherished loved ones.

I think its a rare person who gets a tattoo that doesn’t have some significant meaning to them. Take the time to grab some decent quality pictures of yours so I can post them here sometime very soon!

http://www.brownskin.net/images/massiveKeloid.jpgIf you think some skin art can be painful now. Try to imagine how skin art began. Its highly likely that prehistoric man accidentally stumbled onto the idea of tattooing. Early tattoos were done by cutting a pattern into the skin and then rubbing ash, dirt and different dark substances into the wound to create a scar tissue shaped in a specific way. This was known as a Keloid. This form of tattooing was mostly seen in Africa among some tribes who to this day still practice this form of skin art. The Keloid on the left looks sort of like a tree or mushroom. Certainly not a very perfected form of skin art, but a form nonetheless.

The sole purpose of early tattoos were directly related to the cultural and religious beliefs of the tribes who adorned them. These tattoos were also often seen as a rite of passage into adulthood.  We do know that as early as the year 2000 BC that ancient Egyptians were practicing the arts of henna and tattooing specifically for cosmetic forms of these arts. Mummies have been discovered who had previously had eyeliner tattoos.

So a few hundred years back a very well preserved mummy was found inside of a glacier in the Alps. This was the body of a hunter who had perished there over 5,200 years before. Eventually his body froze into the glacier and was preserved in ice for so very long. This hunter was dubbed the ICEMAN but also came with a few additional surprises. One that found scientist boggled the most were his well preserved tattoos. The ICEMAN had 47 tattoos covering his body that were considered medicinal tattoos. All of his tattoos were located in acupuncture points all over the body. This indeed was a boggling prospect for scientist who know that acupuncture was invented by the ancient Chinese around the time of the birth and life of Christ. This is 3000 years later then what the Iceman disproves. They determined that his tattoos were done with slivers of bones which then had charcoal rubbed into the open wounds to create a tattoo once the swelling subsided.

http://images.cdn.fotopedia.com/flickr-2508462981-image.jpgTattooing is even mentioned at least six times in the Bible. As God was punishing Cain for killing Able he places a mark on Cain so that anyone who found him would not kill him. Some may consider this more of a branding, but no doubt the concept is much the same. The ancient Polynesians also practiced their own art of tattooing which consisted of a tattoo that covered the entire lower half of the body and even in some instances, the entire body including their face and hands. Yes, I see no shame in admitted the tattoo above here has incredible artist quality. And the tattoo is a hell of a creation too! So here it is shown how the ancient art of Polynesian body suits has lived on until today.

Last but not least it is important to know that the word TATTOO is actually derived from the Polynesian word “TATU” which means to mark.

Only in the last one hundred years or so can anyone claim to have come near to perfecting the art of tattooing. It is also likely an ongoing learning practice that will only continue to improve with time!

So although I am hesitant to write such ME stories, I have had the pleasure all of my life to be surrounded by many Skin Art fanatics. I have learned a lot from a lot of them and more then a few have learned from me. Through the years I have noticed that some people have themes to their entire body of ink, while others tend to have several.

I have positively found that certain personalities are attracted to certain styles and forms that Skin art can take. The more serious or contemplative of my friends always tend to have ink with hidden meanings or deep symbolism. Other more whimsical friends will have lighthearted or jokester tattoos that truly do reflect the spirit of their characters. I have really seen some quite outrageous tattoos, as well as seen them while being done, but hesitate to mention them unless we can dub the site with a higher parental rating! But the point is the diversity in skin art is an interesting concept to me. It always has been. So what are some of the ideas I am referring to?

Armband Tattooshttp://www.tattoos.co.nz/gallery/174_500.jpg

This is a very popular form of skin art for guys and gals.

http://tattoo5.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/Foot-tattoo1.jpgFoot Tattoos

This is an ever increasing in popularity spot for skin ink. It may look light and delicate but a foot tattoo is no delicate matter!

Break Through Tattooshttp://www.ratemyink.com/images/ul/670/breakthrough-heart-surgery-tattoo-67031.jpeg

Always having been fairly popular among skin art cultures are the break through tattoos. Those that look like they are breaking through the skin,

http://bodyartmaster.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/forearm002.jpgForearm Tattoos

Having a tattoo on your forearm was pioneered by Popeye and perfected by everyone since then! Forearm tattoos often begin as forearm tattoos and grow into full sleeves.

So with just a few of the types of tattoo inspirations behind us. We can begin to understand the concept of the variations some may choose in their skin art. What you may see no reason for, others may have a great and personal story for having!

I’d love to see and post some personal skin art or favorite skin art from others! You give me a piece of skin art and I will give you a good personal post for your idea of perfect, unique or fantastic skin art!!
